What an EIN does

An Employer Identification Number identifies a business for federal tax purposes. It is separate from forming a company with a state.

Apply directly for free

The IRS does not charge for an EIN. Eligible applicants can use its online application. Any fee paid to a private preparation service is for that service, not for the number itself.

Check the application route

The online route has eligibility requirements relating to the business location and responsible party. If you are outside the United States or do not meet the online requirements, review the IRS instructions for alternative methods.

Keep your confirmation

Save your IRS confirmation with your formation records. Banks and other institutions may request it, although each institution has its own eligibility checks.
